Dancers move, as well does the camera
What is screendance? A hybrid artform combining choreography and filmmaking, in which the finished dance work takes the form of a film, rather than a live performance, and the movement is devised in relationship to the camera.
There is a fascinating potential for experimentation and creation in the interaction between movement and filmmaking.
From the initial idea to conceptualisation, rehearsal/preparation, shooting and final editing, this course offers participants the complete experience of making a short dance film: from the initial idea to the final edit.
The workshop will develop participants’ unique voices as dance filmmakers. Sessions will focus on how to formulate concepts for a dance film and how to translate that vision to film.
Participants will learn basic camera and videography skills to create screendance projects and learn about this emerging dance genre that combines the artistry of dance with the visual art capabilities that cameras offer. Methods for improvisation and site-specific performance will also be explored.
One will practice
The workshop is dedicated to dancers, performers, choreographers, theater and film directors, directors of photography, and visual artists who want to explore the dance film genre. Students from academies with a profile in dance, theater, film, and visual arts are as well welcome to participate.
The workshop can be adapted to any specific frames, themes and contexts such as festival, academics, community building, youth program ...
Over the past several years, I have led this workshop worldwide, engaging with diverse cultural and social contexts. Throughout, I have consistently stimulated dialogue and promoted respectful and productive values in the collaborative process.
